La messe est dite !… La première épreuve de cartographie au bac S depuis le retour de l’Histoire-Géo en Terminale a confirmé ce qu’on pouvait craindre au vu de ce qui se passait déjà dans les autres séries générales. Avec 5 croquis à apprendre, on a un super bachotage et on corrige des séries de croquis rigoureusement identiques dans lesquels la part de l’élève se résume à une compétence (ou non) de coloriage et à une restitution de connaissances façon perroquet ».

Une partie du problème du croquis vient sans doute de la liste limitative (5 croquis en Term S).
Pour le croquis comme pour les compositions, ces limites sont faites pour faciliter le travail des lycéens.
Elles ont un effet pervers : elles renforcent la tentation du bachotage.
Internet est souvent vilipendé, mais si Internet n'existait pas, les annales corrigées donneraient sans doute le même résultat.

- Croquis au bac - « L’épreuve de cartographie prendra la forme d’un croquis de synthèse, comportant une légende commentée... le candidat justifiera ses choix (figurés, seuils, hiérarchie) » (BOEN 12.03.1997). Cette justification disparaît dans le BO du 10.02.2004. En novembre, l’APHG organise une journée
« La carte : un outil majeur pour expliquer le Monde, la France et l’Europe ».

Depuis près de 20 ans, le croquis est une épreuve de bac.
Les intérêts ne manquent pas :
. introduire une dimension visuelle dans des épreuves où l’écrit était envahissant.
. Faire concevoir une légende structurée,
réfléchir aux facteurs en jeu (la nature ? les hommes ?) et proposer un classement.
. Habituer à un effort d’information localisée.
. Le travail est préparé en amont, la structuration de la légende peut servir en composition (plan détaillé).

Il existe aussi des inconvénients :
. La liste incite à une forme de bachotage.
. Les lycéens se contentent parfois de reproduire la carte réalisée ou distribuée en classe, la carte du manuel ou celle des annales de bac.
. Il est difficile de traduire graphiquement certaines réalités
ou de qualifier sur un planisphère des pays non croisés dans les études...
. L’usage des crayons de couleur est inégalement maîtrisé,
mais Philippe Rekacewicz a montré tout l’intérêt de l’esquisse crayonnée (Visions Carto)

En 1997, l’Internet scolaire ne permettait pas de diffuser des images lourdes et des croquis détaillés.
Par contre, vers 2005, l’arrivée de l’ADSL a incité un groupe de professeurs à élaborer des croquis, en complément de ce que comportaient les manuels ou les annales. Plusieurs de ces croquis ont été publiés en monochrome dans Historiens & Géographes. Internet Archive donne accès à ce travail mutualiste, aux cartes réalisées par Francis Monthé, Claude Robinot, Philippe Nouvel, Vincent Capdepuy, Jacques Muniga, etc. Anne Philippon a scanné des croquis réalisés à la main par ses élèves, Yves Guiet a démontré l’intérêt de la schématisation.
Le web permettait de confronter plusieurs solutions pour un même sujet, et la fréquentation augmentait fortement en juin.

Google images indexe des croquis plus récents,
par exemple à ceux réalisés par Jean-Christophe Fichet au lycée de Verneuil.

Le choix du croquis a laissé de côté tout l’apport de la cartographie par ordinateur.
Les premiers ordinateurs n’affichaient que des cartes rudimentaires (Cartax). Philcarto était en avance par rapport aux cartes graphiques du moment. Logicarte ou Cabral 1500 ont permis d’enseigner la discrétisation ou la sémiologie graphique. Grâce à Internet, Geoclip a donné accès en ligne à des données statistiques considérables et a dispensé de saisir les chiffres.

Les sujets de bac ont ignoré ces pistes.
Les cartes à commenter incitaient à la paraphrase : les flux commerciaux étaient doublés par les chiffres correspondants.
Et les erreurs ne manquaient pas : sur un planisphère de 1997, Toyota ne produisait pas d’autos au Japon !
Au total, au lycée, les logiciels de dessin ont servi davantage que les logiciels de cartographie.
La complexité des SIG a limité la diffusion de la géomatique.
Et l’Ecole est restée imperméable à la localisation par GPS qui a supplanté les cartes imprimées.

Les didacticiens n’apprécient guère cette épreuve.
Deux articles de Mappemonde illustrent leur point de vue :
« Géographie : l’épreuve du bac est-elle nulle ? » (1999),
« Quels croquis de géographie au baccalauréat ?» (2006).

En Allemagne, Anke Uhlenwinkel est aussi très critique :

Curated by Alice Hudson, former Chief of the Map Division at the New York Public Library, Women in Cartography showcases the works of better-known women cartographers such as Marie Tharp, who, in partnership with Bruce Heezen, created the first scientific map of the entire ocean floor, and, Agnes Sinclair Holbrook who created the Hull-House maps, statistical cartographic presentations of social data from the immigrant rich Near West Side neighborhoods of Chicago ».

Emma Willard was a respected pioneer in women's education in the U. S. In 1821 she founded the first academy for girls, the Troy Female Seminary, or Emma Willard School. Graduates from Troy went on to found women's colleges across America, offering ever more formal and professionally related curricula as the world of work became more open to women. She wrote many works that all appeared in multiple editions, such as Universal Geography, Geography for Beginners, Abridged History of the United States, and Astronography; or Astronomical Geography.
