La traite est interdite par l'Angleterre et les USA en 1807. Elle continue de manière illégale, notamment du fait des Portugais dans l'Atlantique Sud (Angola-Brésil). La fin effective n'est qu'acquise d'au début des années 1860.

Aux USA, en 1776, il y a près de 600 000 esclaves en 1776 (environ 20 % de la population).
En 1860, ils sont presque 4 millions (environ 12 %, mais 38 % dans les Etats du Sud, 47 % en Louisiane, 57 % en Caroline du Sud). Toujours en 1860, 400 000 sont des libres de couleur. (Atlas des esclavages, Autrement)
