En 1913, Berlin venait d’accueillir ce qui est apparu depuis
comme un événement clé pour l’histoire de l’art au xxe siècle :
le Premier Salon d’Automne allemand
dans la Galerie de Herwarth Walden

Le 5 novembre 1913 était donc inaugurée au Musée égyptien de Berlin
l’exposition des sculptures trouvées à Tell el-Amarna.
Dès son inauguration, l’exposition fut un grand succès public.
Conçue pour durer une semaine, elle fut prolongée jusqu’en juin 1914
et l’on peut considérer qu’elle contribua largement à faire d’Amarna et d’Akhenaton des sujets à la mode en Allemagne ...

This city was founded by Pharaoh Akhenaton (Amenhotep IV) in order to establish a new capital with places of worship for his own 'religion of light', whose sole deity was the god Aton. The city was built within three years and was populated in the year 1343 BC. At the beginning of the 20th century, extremely successful excavations took place there under the direction of Ludwig Borchardt, and the finds were shared between Cairo and Berlin.

During the 1912-1913 excavations in Amarna, between 7000 and 10,000 objects were discovered, 5000 of which are now located in Berlin.
The 2013 exhibition comprises approximately 400 objects, including 50 loans...
