Bernardino Licinio (1485-1549) « The naked woman »
http://www.virtualuffizi.com/fr/bernardino-licinio.html

Venetian painter Bernardino Licinio’s fame stayed in the shade for centuries due to a mistake by Vasari that confused two different painters' names. It is only since the early 1900s that Licinio's has begun to be distinguished along with his works, influenced by Titian, Giorgione and Palma the Elder. He was a versatile artist, praised as one of the most important portraitists of his time.

On view in the new rooms dedicated to the 16th-century painting,
« The naked woman » is striking for its modernity. Licinio renders the classic subject of a lying naked #Venusin an extremely erotic version, without background or other narrative elements aside.

The focus is all on the woman's body, portrayed in a languid pose on a white sheet stressing her complexion’s colour. Her head, depicted in perspective, rests on the puffy pillow. On the foreground two doves are perched as an emblem of love. Her profile follows the pillow’s line and only her nose, breast and knee come out from the dark red background.
