The oldest known image of a Chartist rally (1839) has been uncovered by professor Ian Haywood (Roehampton U.)
after lying untouched in a sketchbook in the US Library of Congress

« The pen-and-ink sketch by Englishman Richard Doyle shows dozens of supporters being strong-armed by the Metropolitan Police who broke up the event. Officers were sent to the Bull Ring in Birmingham by the Government to bring an otherwise peaceful event in favour of political reform and social justice under control ».


Le chartisme est un mouvement politique au Royaune-Uni au milieu du XIXe.
En 1838, la Charte populaire réclamait le suffrage universel masculin, un juste découpage des circonscriptions électorales, l'abolition de l'obligation d'être propriétaire pour être éligible, des élections législatives annuelles, le vote à bulletin secret et l'indemnité parlementaire. Deux autres pétitions sont lancées en 1842 et en 1848
